SCHEP is pleased to share that Busayra, located in Tafileh Governorate, has been selected by the Ministry of Culture as one of three Cities of Culture for 2019! Throughout the year, the Ministry of Culture will implement a series of activities to advance art and culture in the district.
SCHEP has been working with the Department of Antiquities/ Directorate of Antiquities of Tafila and the local community in Busayra since 2016 to make improvements to the archaeological site Busayra, including the development of a trail and the installation of interpretive signs to help visitors navigate and understand this unique site and its incredible history. In the attached video you can see the historical mural that was recently installed with SCHEP’s support, detailing key moments and eras in Busayra’s history, which designed by local architect Toqa al Oran from Tafileh and painted by local artists and teachers. SCHEP has also recently established a cultural heritage lab for children and youth in a school bordering the archaeological site, the first of its kind in the entire kingdom!
Finally, SCHEP collaborated with members of the local community in Busayra to support a local, women-led initiative, the Busayra Foundation for Cultural Heritage, which will carry on the work of caring for the site and conducting heritage and tourism activities. If you have not yet had a chance to visit Busayra and learn about this fascinating site, make it one of your goals for 2019!
