About USAID SCHEP:

USAID SCHEP is a four year USAID project that aims to foster community and economic development through training and utilizing best practices in cultural heritage preservation and management. USAID SCHEP is implemented by The American Center of Oriental Research (ACOR).

USAID SCHEP employs a holistic approach for conducting cultural resource management by utilizing a grassroots social engagement model that emphasizes the local communities as the primary stakeholders in cultural heritage preservation. In addition to SCHEP supported cultural heritage sites, SCHEP works to build capacity for university students and recent graduates who wish to pursue careers in the field.

About Training:

The training aims to provide the essential knowledge useful to deal with the conservation of archaeological wall paintings in an underground environment. In particular, it is fundamental to transmit the knowledge of the general issues connected with this problem to the personnel in charge of the decision-making aspects on field.

Training will cover topics such as how preservation of underground painted environments can be implemented, standard painting techniques in Roman wall paintings, biological threats to the conservation of paintings within hypogeal structures, and methodology in the wall paintings conservation. Also are specific problems of conservation of the wall paintings in the underground environment, microclimate aspects of hypogeal archaeological environments and first-aid intervention, as well as worksite experience within Bayt Ra’s of newly discovered Hypogeum.

Training will held at the Department of Antiquities office in Bayt Ra’s/Irbid during September 17-21, 2017.

Desired Qualifications:

·         University student or recent graduate majoring in conservation.

·         Good written and spoken Arabic and English.
