The new year is here, and we're kicking things off by bringing you a rich guidebook introducing readers to the environment and heritage of the Southern Ghor of Jordan. Zoara, the Southern Ghor of Jordan: A Guide to the Landscape and Heritage of the Lowest Place_ by Konstantinos D. Politis (ACOR 2020) introduces the reader to the environment and history of "Zoara" and illustrates what people today are doing to preserve this unique Jordanian treasure. USAID SCHEP firmly believes in the importance of supporting educational and training materials that will enhance accessibility of Jordanian archaeological heritage in the region.

SCHEP awarded funds to the Ghawr as Safi Project, under the leadership of Konstantinos D. Politis, with focus on a historical sugar factory in the area. Support was geared towards further research on the site and improving accessibility for visitors. This has included clearing the site of debris and constructing a path for tourists throughout the site. Interpretive panels were installed to allow visitors to explore for themselves, without a guide. Furthermore, SCHEP proudly partners with local community members in Ghawr as Safi to bring new community- and culture-based experiences to this often-overlooked travel destination. We are proud to partner with the Jordan Southern Ghawr Company to encourage sustainable tourism and create economic opportunities for local Safi residents.
